The details of veteran defenseman Josh Manson's contract extension with the Avalanche is sparking some controversy among the Colorado fanbase.

Manson is now under contract with the Avalanche through the 2027-28 season.

Manson's new deal raises eyebrows.

Graham Tiedtke from Mile High Sticking writes that the contract also features a 12-team no-trade clause in the first year, followed by a 10-team no-trade clause in the second year.
At 33 years old, Manson is considered on the older side for an NHL player, especially given the physical toll the sport takes over time. Unfortunately, since being traded from the Anaheim Ducks, he has played only 173 out of a possible 328 regular-season games.
"Though his cap hit goes from $4.5 million to $3.95 million once the extension kicks in, it's still a little bit of a surprise that the Avalanche chose to extend the often-injured defender. I think his tenure and continuity with the team is one reason why general manager Chris MacFarland chose to extend him. He's not a player who was just acquired during last season and had played horribly, like a couple of players in recent years." -Tiedtke

I really hope Manson can stay healthy for the remainder of his career, as that remains the biggest concern. To put it in perspective, the most games he's played in a single Avalanche season is 76, with his next highest being just 48 games.
Last season, Manson recorded one goal and 14 assists, while averaging 18:02 of ice time, the highest he's seen wearing the Avalanche jersey. However, that ice time comes with the caveat of limited games played, which makes it all the more unfortunate.
"It will be interesting to see what the Avalanche choose to do with Manson throughout his remaining years with the club. Will they hold onto him for the duration of the extension? Or will they find that a trade will be a beneficial move at some point down the road? You can't rule anything out." -Tiedtke

Signing Manson to an extension also reduces the urgency to find a depth defenseman. With Brent Burns already added to the roster recently, it's clear that bolstering defensive depth was a major focus this offseason. While some may criticize the Manson extension, it's encouraging to see Chris MacFarland talking proactive steps to strengthen the team.
