A recent report confirms that the Colorado Avalanche are expected not to retain superstar forward Martin Necas once his contract comes to an end at the conclusion of this season, signaling a major potential change for the team.

The Avalanche and their star forward are reportedly both interested in a contract extension, but financial considerations could make reaching a deal challenging.

Avalanche likely to part ways with Martin Necas according to new report.

Tyler Major-Mcnicol from Breakaway On Si writes that Necas is in the final year of his two-year, $13 million contract, with an average annual value (AAV) of $6.5 million.
However, with the Colorado Avalanche needing to secure a new deal for Cale Makar, and even with the salary cap expected to rise next year, it's likely Necas will be traded, either at the Trade Deadline or before the start of the next season.
"Makar, who is a Stanley Cup Champion, Conn Smythe winner and has a Norris Trophy, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027, and is likely to sign a deal upwards of the $15-$17-million range. It's also conceivable that Necas isn't going to accept a deal worth less than $9-million." -Major-Mcnicol

Here's what a longtime NHL pro scout told RG in a recent interview...
"I'd be stunned if he even finishes the season with the Avalanche, let alone extends in Colorado." -Anonymous Source

Necas could remain with the Avalanche past the trade deadline to help the team in the playoffs and then be traded during the offseason.
However, unless he signs an extension with Colorado, it seems likely he will be dealt and eventually sign a new contract with another team.
"Of course, it could be perceived just as noise and rumors, but so long as an extension isn't in place, or speculation about one being discussed isn't out in the media, the idea that a trade is on the horizon takes on a life of its own." -Major-Mcnicol

As with any player approaching a major contract extension, managing performance can be challenging.
With the league's top defenseman likely taking priority, if there isn't enough cap space, the team's focus must be on retaining the most essential players while preserving depth throughout the lineup.
