Colorado Avalanche divisional rival St. Louis Blues' general manager Doug Armstrong criticizes the NHL trade market during a very sluggish offseason.
This NHL offseason has been unusually quiet, and in a recent interview, Armstrong opened up about just how strange things have felt behind the scenes.
Avalanche divisional rivals under fire.
Tom Banks from House Of Hockey writes that the NHL offseason got off to a promising start with some notable trades leading up to the 2025 Draft, sparking excitement across the league.
But since the, surprises have been few and far between. Mitch Marner landed in Vegas, Brock Boeser re-signed in Vancouver, and Nikolaj Ehlers was dealt to Carolina after Florida secured its three key free agents. With those major names off the board, the market has gone quiet, leaving fans and insiders waiting for the next big move.
Many fans have been frustrated by the lack of activity this offseason, especially with no many rumours swirling about potential moves. Now, Blues' GM Doug Armstrong has weighed in, calling it a particularly "strange" offseason so far.
"In my 21 years of GM this has been my strangest summer. We have all of our contracts done on July 2nd. We signed Suter and put the 'go fish' sign on the door. We'll talk to other teams but we'll just prepare for August." -Armstrong
Heading into the offseason, the Blues were reportedly in the mix for big names like Mitch Marner and Nikolaj Ehlers. With ongoing speculation around Jordan Kyrou, it's surprising that their only significant moves so far have been signing Pius Suter and trading for Logan Mailloux.
"In the past few weeks, there's been multiple reports of big moves coming in the very near future, but thus far, it's been over a week since a significant move has been made, and with the Blues looking to build on their strong push to the Stanley Cup Playoffs a year ago, it's easy to see why Armstrong is sincerely frustrated." -Banks
We'll see what further develops over the course of the NHL offseason.
