A recent report revealed that it was officially time for the Colorado Avalanche to part way with veteran forward Miles Wood this offseason.

The Avalanche moved Charlie Coyle and Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a cap-clearing trade earlier this offseason to free up salary cap space.

Avalanche needed to part ways with Wood.

Trent Finnegan from Denver Sports writes that while the Avalanche were fielding calls on Coyle, the player drawing the most interest from the Avalanche, recent reports suggest GM Chris MacFarland and the front office made one thing clear: there was a condition for any team hoping to land him.
Elliotte Friedman: Re Charlie Coyle: Colorado made it clear that if you were going to get Coyle, you were going to have to take Miles Wood too; Wood needed a change of scenery - 32 Thoughts Podcast
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Wood was in need of a "change of scenery" after just two seasons in Colorado. Fan frustration had clearly grown, and with several years remaining on his contract, many were concerned about the long-term commitment to a player who wasn't meeting expectations.
"In the 2023-24 season, Wood played in 74 games for the Avalanche, scored 26 points (9 goals, 17 assists) and was a -5 on the ice. In this past season, he only managed to get on the ice for 37 games, as he put up just eight points (four goals, four assists) and was a -5 once again. In the playoffs this past season, he played in just one game, Game 2, in which he was a -3 on the ice in a 4-3 overtime loss that swung the momentum of the series." -Finnegan

Wood served as a decent depth option for the Avalanche, but this latest report offers insight into how the organization viewed him following an injury-plagued season.
The front office ultimately got its wish, packaging him with Coyle in the trade to Columbus, giving both the team and player a much-needed fresh start.
