The Colorado Avalanche may revisit their interest in San Jose Sharks star defenseman Mario Ferraro as he heads into the final year of his contract.
Insider Elliotte Friedman reported earlier that the Avalanche appear content with how their roster is currently built. That suggests if Ryan Lindgren and Jonathan Drouin end up leaving, it likely won't cause much concern for GM Chris MacFarland.
Sharks' top blueliner continuously linked to the Avalanche.
Nestor Quixtan from Mile High Sticking writes that Ferraro is approaching the final year of his contract, which carries a manageable $3.25 million cap hit. At 26 years old, he plays as a left-shot defenseman.
"The Colorado Avalanche already have Devon Toews and Samuel Girard on the left side. So, would Ferraro be a third-pairing blue liner? Ferraro could be more of a replacement for Josh Manson if he can play on his offside. Manson is in the final year of his contract also and is coming off an injury-plagued campaign." -Quixtan
I'd guess that a sizeable contact would need to be sent back to San Jose to make Ferraro's cap hit under the Avalanche's salary cap. Fortunately for the Sharks, they have over $40 million in cap space and Logan Couture's $8 million cap hit currently on LTIR, giving them plenty of room to absorb a hefty salary.
"It's worth pointing out as well that the Avs only have four defensemen under contract for next season. Technically, five, if Keaton Middleton is counted. So, there would be a need for another NHL-caliber blue liner to round out the defense core." -Quixtan
We'll have to wait and see what further develops throughout the offseason.
