The Florida Panthers have built a reputation for being a wild bunch on the ice, and off of it, if you could ask the Stanley Cup.
For the second consecutive year, the iconic NHL trophy reportedly took some damage during the Panthers' raucous citywide championship celebration.
A puzzling trend is emerging during the Stanley Cup championship celebrations.
Sean Neumann from Yahoo Sports writes that according to the Associated Press, the Stanley Cup suffered a crack and a dented base within just 24 hours of returning to the Panthers. While that might sound alarming, the AP notes this kind of wear and tear is nothing new, and likely won't be the last, as the Cup traditionally endures a fair share of bumps and bruises during its offseason world tour from player to player.
"In fact, the Panthers appear to have handled the Cup a bit more responsibly than the Colorado Avalanche, who damaged the Cup within minutes of winning it in 2022." -Neumann
The Associated press notes that the Hockey Hall of Fame's "Keepers of the Cup" are aware of the damage sustained on Wednesday and are prepared to make the necessary repairs once the trophy is back in their care.
The panthers clinched their second straight Stanley Cup this week, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 in the Final. Wirth the win, Florida becomes only the fourth team in the past 30 years to repeat as champions, and just the 10th team to do so since the NHL expanded beyond the "Original Six" era in 1967.
