On Wednesday, the NHL revealed the Colorado Avalanche blueliner Cale Makar has been awarded the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman for the 2024-25 season.

By winning the award, Makar becomes the 14th defenseman in NHL history to earn the Norris Trophy multiple times.

Kyle Morton from Daily Faceoff poses the question: beyond his clear rival, Vancouver Canucks star Quinn Hughes, who else is truly poised to challenge for the Norris Trophy in the seasons ahead?
On Wednesday's episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and Insider/President of Hockey Content Frank Seravalli broke down potential future Norris contenders, highlighting Montreal Canadiens' Lane Hutson, Carolina Hurricanes' Jaccob Slavin, and Dallas Stars' Miro Heiskanen as key names to keep an eye on.
"I think Lane Hutson will be entering the chat. I think Jaccob Slavin, if you want to award the Norris on a different basis of being the best all-around defenseman, is certainly in that category. Werenski could continue to challenge, but one guy that didn't get any votes this year, in part due to injury, is Miro Heiskanen in Dallas. He's someone that if he can find the upper echelon of a point total, that I think Miro Heiskanen could win one or multiple Norris Trophies because he's that good of an all-around player It's a gap to close for sure, but if he can add that or find that to his game or has a power play that takes off like a rocket ship with Dallas, look out, because Heiskanen could be in that category for sure." -Seravalli

Cale Makar, the 26-year-old Calgary native became only the ninth defenseman in NHL history to notch 30 goals in a single season. He led all defenseman in goals with 30, assists with 62, and points with 92, marking his second straight campaign with 90 or more points.
Alongside his two Norris Trophies, Makar also earned the Conn Smythe Trophy during Colorado's 2022 Stanley Cup championship run.
While Makar remains at the pinnacle for now, a rising wave of elite talent suggests his reign as the NHL's best defenseman may soon be challenged, or even surpassed.
