The Colorado Avalanche need a strong start to the NHL season. Last year's slow beginning set them back for months, and with a gruelling schedule ahead, plus the Olympic break, getting off on the right foot is more important than ever.

The Central Division is arguably the toughest in the league, and the Avalanche need to have a strong start in order to succeed and stay on top throughout the NHL season.

Strong start is essential if the Avalanche want a chance at the Stanley Cup.

Katie Bartlett of Mile High Sticking discussed how the Avalanche's poor start last season proved costly, emphasizing that they can't afford a repeat this year or risk falling too far behind divisional rivals like the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars.
"In the 2024-2025 season, the Colorado Avalanche got off to a horrendous start with four straight losses. While they were able to salvage a 5-5 record over the first ten games, that slow start put them on the back foot and left them chasing in the Central Division, eventually clawing their way to third behind the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars." -Barlett

It won't be an easy task, as the Avalanche face tough competition to start the season, but if they find success early, it could give them a chance to build valuable separation in the divisional standings.
"The Avs play against three teams - the Los Angeles Kings, the Dallas Stars and the Carolina Hurricanes - that were second in their respective divisions last season. These games will be an early test to see if the Avs can dictate play against other strong teams" -Barlett

The Avalanche will also face two dark horse teams, the Utah Mammoth and Columbus Blue Jackets, before taking on the Boston Bruins twice and the Buffalo Sabres, both of whom struggled last season.
Wins are expected in all five of those matchups. While it's not the toughest ten-game stretch to open a season, it's far from easy.
A fair projection would see Colorado finishing 7-3 in their first ten, which would provide a strong foothold in the Central Division, especially if one of those victories comes against Dallas.
