Martin Necas' ongoing contract negotiations have dominated headlines in recent days, and Colorado Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland has finally broken his silence to address the situation publicly.

The Avalanche are entering the season with one of their top wingers in the final year of his contract, setting the stage for a potential big payday.

Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland reveals his plans for Martin Necas.

Trent Finnegan from Denver Sports writes that Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland was unable to finalize a contract extension with the Moose and ultimately traded him six weeks before the deadline, believing it was the best move for the team.
The big question now: has he learned anything from how that situation unfolded?
MacFarland didn't go into specifics, carefully skirting the finer points of the organization's discussions with Necas' camp.
"I've chatted with the agent. We're not going to get into the day to day, week to week, type of stuff. We'd like to get something done. I think that's kind of the update. Any free agent to be, there's a number of them still out there, and when you find the connection, you find the connection, and it gets announced. Sometimes early, sometimes mid year, sometimes late. That's the challenging part of the business, but we're super excited to have Marty and think he has a fantastic role and he's an important player for us." -MacFarland
Recent reports suggest that contract talks between the Avalanche and Necas hadn't progressed far, echoing Necas' own admission that he wasn't sure what stage the negotiations were at.
Currently earning $6.5 million per season, rumours indicate his next extension could push close to $10 million annually.
"Will the recent contract extension of Connor McDavid change anything? The all-world superstar just signed a two-year, $25 million contract extension to stay in Edmonton for the near future, a payout that shocked the NHL world. MacFarland said that external extensions like McDavid's do play somewhat of a role, but he is also just focused on what's going on in-house." -MacFarland

The Avalanche open their season Tuesday night on the road against the Los Angeles Kings.
There's no indication of a standoff between Necas and the team, and fans shouldn't worry about his status, unless he's absent from the lineup in Los Angeles.
