Former Colorado Avalanche goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, once a regular NHL starter, has been placed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres and will be assigned to the AHL if he goes unclaimed.

In a surprising move, Georgiev was placed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres, the very team he had only recently signed with.

Alexandar Georgiev put on waivers half a season after being the starter for the Colorado Avalanche.

Josh Erickson of Pro Hockey Rumors broke the news of Georgiev's status with the Sabres.
"Georgiev was listed on Buffalo's opening night roster yesterday, but they were carrying three goalies after claiming Colten Ellis off waivers from the Blues. The Sabres value the latter more, with Ruff telling Rachel Lenzi of The Buffalo News that Ellis is someone the Sabres have been «really high on» for quite some time and were unwilling to pass up the opportunity to have him on the wire. As a result, Georgiev won't be starting the season with the club and will head to AHL Rochester should he clear waivers." -Erickson

It's surprising how far Georgiev's play has declined since his outstanding season just two years ago. Now, he's likely headed to the AHL in search of a path back to the NHL.
Despite having a strong team in front of him last year, Georgiev struggled mightily, finishing with the league's worst save percentage and goals-against average among goaltenders with at least 30 starts.
"Georgiev, 29, finished top 10 in Vezina Trophy voting as recently as 2022-23 but is now scrambling to find an NHL job. He made 49 appearances last year between the Avalanche and the Sharks, heading to San Jose in the midseason deal that sent Mackenzie Blackwood the other way." -Erickson

Georgiev signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres worth an AAV of just $825,000, and this season may be his final opportunity to prove he can still compete as an NHL goaltender.
