The Colorado Avalanche have sparked curiosity and speculation among fans after making a surprising decision regarding depth forward Logan O'Connor as the 2025-26 NHL season kicks off.

O'Connor had hip surgery in June, and although the procedure was successful, his recovery is projected to take five to six months, which means he is expected to miss a large part of the upcoming season.

Avalanche make a questionable move on Logan O'Connor that has fans talking.

O'Connor could be bouncing back sooner than expected after undergoing his second hip surgery in as many years.
O'Connor has already been seen skating with the team, fueling optimism that his recovery may be ahead of schedule.
This was sent to me by a friend, but Logan O'Connor is skating today. This will mark the first time that we have seen him skate in Colorado after his hip surgery postseason.
However, the Avalanche just officially placed O'Connor on Long Term Injury Reserve (LTIR).
After submitting their opening roster, the #GoAvsGO put Logan O'Connor on LTIR. They can now exceed the cap by $2.22M.

They are currently under the cap, not using LTIR, and are therefore accruing cap space.
The Avalanche announced O'Connor would once again go under the knife. This was after a career-high six points in seven games against the Dallas Stars during the playoffs.
He became a deadly player that no one expected to shine during the first round. One of his three goals was a shorthanded goal during Game Four at Ball Arena.
Under the new timeline, O'Connor could return as early as October 26 against the New Jersey Devils, far earlier than the original December 23 projection versus the Utah Mammoth.
Either way, the gap in the lineup with O'Connor out is tough to fill. He plays a 200-foot game and never lets up on his forecheck.
The offseason re-signing of Joel Kiviranta may help with that, but he does not bring the same grit to the game as O'Connor does.
