In a surprising development, the Vancouver Canucks have named former Colorado Avalanche captain Adam Foote as their next head coach.

Reports earlier this week indicated the Canucks had narrowed their search to two primary candidates: Abbotsford Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra and Foote, who had been serving as an assistant coach with Vancouver since 2023.

Adam Foote is the new head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

Nextor Quixtan from the Mile High Sticking Speculation writes that earlier swirled earlier this week, with reports suggesting the Canucks had narrowed their search to two leading candidates: Abbotsford Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra and Foote. A familiar face behind the bench, Foote has served as an assistant coach with the Canucks since 2023.

"In my estimation, Foote's hiring in Vancouver has to do with rumors about Hughes wanting to play with his brothers in New Jersey. If that's the case, the Canucks made the right call in hiring Foote, who's leadership and influence, well known by longtime Avalanche fans, will help the Canucks keep their franchise player." -Quixtan

It remains to be seen whether Foote, who previously served as head coach of the Kelowna Rockets from 2018 to 2020, can ignite a turnaround in Vancouver following a disappointing campaign this season.
Quixtan also writes that Adam Foote's connection to the Avalanche organization goes all the way back to the Quebec Nordiques era. He was drafted 22nd overall by the Nordiques in 1989, the same draft in which the team selected Mats Sundin first overall.
"Foote eventually reached the NHL during the 1991-92 season, playing in 46 games. He would never go back to the minors, playing four seasons with the Nordiques before the franchise moved to Colorado." -Quixtan

After the franchise relocated, Foote became a fixture with the Colorado Avalanche from 1995 to 2004, playing a key role on their Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1996 and 2001. He later spent time with the Columbus Blue Jackets before making a return to the Avalanche in 2008.
Adam Foote is remembered as one of the most respected and admired defensemen in Colorado Avalanche history. His gritty, physical style of play made him a fan favorite, particularly during the height of the fierce Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry.
We wish him nothing but the best of luck in Vancouver.
