Fewer than nine months after a knee injury sidelined Colorado Avalanche top prospect for the entire 2024-25 season, Sean Behrens was back on the ice last week at Avalanche Development Camp.

Behrens was selected in the second round (61st overall) at the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

Avalanche top prospect makes a comeback.

Coby Maier from NHL.com writes that Behrens was gearing up for his first full professional season with the AHL's Colorado Eagles when a knee injury during an October practice scrimmage abruptly ended his year before it even started.
Behrens admitted that his lengthy rehab journey was filled with both highs and lows.
«It's really humbling experience when you go from an NHL camp to not really being able to walk. So it's tough in that sense. But I think every day is a new challenge, whether your knee's feeling good or not, you kind of have to push through it a little bit and try to make the most of each day to stay on that progression.» -Behrens

Although he didn't suit up for any games last season, Behrens found value in staying around the Eagles throughout his rehab, focusing on the positives during his recovery.
«It was an awesome experience. Just being able to be with the team [and] see what the day-to-day is like at pro hockey. And I couldn't be more thankful for the medical team up there and the staff with the Eagles for helping me with the rehab and getting back.» -Behrens

Behrens shared that he found several aspects of Gabriel Landeskog's new documentary relatable and said he appreciated watching his journey back to the ice.
"It seemed like he was really ready to play hockey again and he missed it. And I feel like I feel the same way. Getting that taken away from you and not really knowing if you're going to get a chance that year is tough. So being able to see him play and come back was awesome.» -Behrens

At last week's development camp, Behrens said his focus was on getting back on the ice consistently and regaining his rhythm in practice. Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, his top priority is staying healthy.
