The Colorado Avalanche made their seventh consecutive playoff appearance, but the season ended in disappointment with a first-round exit in the hands of the Dallas Stars.

Now, as they aim to retool their roster, salary cap limitations could force them to make some tough decisions. One potential trade candidate is Samuel Girard, and there is one team that could be an ideal fit for his skillset.

Bryan Logan from Clutch Points writes that with contract negotiations looming for Martin Necas and Jack Drury, the Avalanche may be exploring ways to free up additional cap space. With only $7.3 million remaining, one possible solution could be moving Girard in a trade.
"The Ottawa Senators have already made one trade to add to their blueline, trading with the Los Angeles Kings for Jordan Spence. This does not preclude them from making another move, and this could be a solid play for Ottawa. By adding Spence, the Senators got a 24-year-old in the last year of his contract. Spence had four goals with 24 assists while also blocking 77 shots. Adding Girard would be a similar addition. Girard had 24 points last year, but has been a 30-point scorer for much of his career. He did have 111 shots blocked and 24 takeaways, both numbers better than Spence." -Logan

The Senators would need to make additional roster moves to make a trade for Girard work, as they currently have less than $2 million in cap space, well short of Girard's $5 million cap hit. However, if Ottawa is aiming to add a second defenseman in the mold of their recent acquisition, parting ways with Nick Jensen could be the answer.
Jensen is currently projected to be part of the second defensive pairing, and trading him would create the necessary space to bring in Girard, who offers a younger, more offensively dynamic option on the blue line.
"It is clear that Ottawa desires this type of player, as shown by their long-term commitments to Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot. A deal here would allow them to acquire another solid defender on the blue line who can also help out on offense." -Logan

We'll have to wait and see if anything develops over the offseason.
