Colorado Avalanche divisional rival Winnipeg Jets have been rocked by a major injury to veteran defenseman Dylan Samberg, dealing a significant blow to their lineup and raising questions about how the team will adjust its defensive strategy heading into the upcoming season.

Jets head coach Scott Arniel told reporters Monday that Samberg will be out for six to eight weeks due to a broken wrist.

Winnipeg Jets suffer massive blow to top defenseman Dylan Samberg.

"It's like the first day of camp last year when we lost two 'D'. It's unfortunate. He's a big part of our hockey team, but we've asked guys to step up before and this is all part of that battle of guys battling for jobs, whether that's in practice or the exhibition games." -Arniel

Sportsnet reports that Samberg sustained the injury during Saturday's preseason game after being hit by Calgary Flames' Ryan Lomberg.
The six-foot-four Minnesota native signed a three-year extension with the Jets this past summer, carrying an AAV of $5.75 million.
"Samberg enjoyed a breakout campaign last season in Winnipeg, scoring a career-high six goals and 20 points while logging just over 21 minutes of ice time a night, nearly six minutes more than his previous best." -Sportsnet staff writer

Samberg, 26, added three assists in the 2024-25 postseason while averaging more than 24 minutes on the ice.
The six-foot-four, 216-pound defenseman was drafted 43rd overall by Winnipeg in 2017.
The Jets will kick off their season at home against the Dallas Stars on October 9. They captured the 2025 Presidents' Trophy with the league's best regular-season record (56-22-4) but were ousted from the playoffs in six games by the Stars in the Western Conference Second Round.
