A stunning new report has surfaced, providing a major update on the ongoing trade rumours connecting Colorado Avalanche forward Ross Colton to the Detroit Red Wings, leaving fans and analysts buzzing with speculation.

Colton has one year remaining on his four-year, $16 million contract with the Avalanche, and a recent report has revealed the terrifying truth on why Colton is poised for a breakout campaign next season.

Red Wings have been reportedly eyeing Ross Colton in a potential blockbuster deal.

Tristan McKinstry from Heavy.com writes that one of Detroit's biggest needs this summer was adding scoring depth. While the team still lacks a top-six forward, they also needed to find a goal-scoring support throughout the lineup to ease the burden on their stop stars.
"This team still has room to make moves, though. And there are some intriguing opportunities they could pursue on the trade market. Given how NHL Free Agency looks, their best chance at making a move comes on the trade market, as well." -McKinstry

Keeping this context in mind, McKinstry is suggesting a trade that would have the Red Wings acquiring Colton in exchange for forward Michael Rasmussen.
"Detroit can stand to benefit from his physical presence. He has recorded at least 140 hits in each of the last four seasons. Moreover, he has recorded at least 145 hits in three of the last four campaigns. Overall, he checks a lot of important boxes for the Red Wings.

Rasmussen is a very similar player to Colton. He doesn't have the same scoring touch as Colton. But he can still score goals, having reached 10+ goals in each of the last four seasons. Moreover, he is a physical presence who is more of a shot blocker, as well." -McKinstry

The former first-round pick achieves all of this while earning less than Colton and still has an additional year under contract. Being two years younger than Colton also gives Colorado more flexibility.
While the Avalanche wouldn't part with a player like Colton for nothing, this proposed trade provides them with extra salary cap room and a chance for his offensive game to further develop over the next few seasons.
