NHL fans are stunned as former Colorado Avalanche star forward Mikko Rantanen faces a hefty legal penalty, sparking widespread reaction across the hockey world.
Rantanen was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes earlier last season before eventually landing with the Dallas Stars.

Tom Banks from House of Hockey writes that in Finland, men are required to complete six months of military service between the ages of 18 and 28, and now Rantanen faces a fine for failing to fulfill this obligation.
"It's likely that the 28-year old was hoping this summer would be a much more relaxed time heading into the 2025/26 NHL season, but according to the latest report out of Finland, that may ultimately not be the case." -Banks
According to a leading Finnish media outlet, the talented Stars forward reportedly skipped the mandatory six months of military service required between the ages of 18 and 28 and now faces a substantial fine as a consequence.
"In the report, it was revealed that Rantanen has indeed submitted an application to delay his service, but as it came in beyond his 28th birthday, he is faced with a fine that equates to $99,000 USD.
Thankfully for Rantanen, his application was accepted, so he will face no further punishment from Finland or the Finnish military, but to take a fine that large is certainly something that even players in the NHL would want to avoid." -Banks

Fortunately for Rantanen, the situation ended on a relatively positive note. Had he not submitted the necessary application, he could have faced a much larger penalty. For now, he will pay a $99, 000 fine and will likely complete his military service at a later date.
