A recent NHL report has shared a noteworthy update on Colorado Avalanche superstar Martin Necas, offering new details about ongoing discussions surrounding his contract extension and what it could mean for his future with the team.

Necas becomes a free agent after this season and is waiting patiently to gauge his options.

NHL report reveals major update on Martin Necas' extension talks with the Avalanche.

Dan Rosen from NHL.com writes that Necas reportedly mentioned in Denver last week that his agent is actively negotiating with the Avalanche, though he didn't provide specific details. He is in the final year of a two-year, $13 million contract ($6.5 million AAV) that he originally signed with the Carolina Hurricanes before being traded to Colorado last season in the three-way deal that sent Mikko Rantanen to Raleigh on Jan. 24.
"The longer it plays out the more likely it can become a repeat of the Rantanen situation, where the Avalanche couldn't get him signed or didn't want to pay him what he eventually got with the Dallas Stars ($12 million AAV; eight years, $96 million) and decided to trade him midseason. Trading Rantanen and the No. 1 wing they got for him in back-to-back seasons would seemingly be a devasting blow to the Avalanche's chances of winning the Stanley Cup again." -Rosen

The outcome hinges on Necas' asking price, reportedly around a $10 million AAV for his next contract, and how the Avalanche evaluate that figure.
"Necas is Colorado's best wing, the likely linemate for center Nathan MacKinnon, and he's coming off his best season with 83 points (27 goals, 56 assists) in 79 games split between Carolina and Colorado. He had 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) in 30 games with the Avalanche after the trade and four points (one goal, three assists) in seven playoff games against the Dallas Stars in the first round." -Rosen

It's clear that the rising NHL salary cap will work in Colorado's favour when negotiating with Necas. The cap is set at $104 million next season and projected to hit $113.5 million in 2027-28, which coincides with the first year of defenseman Cale Makar's new, likely massive contract.
Makar still has this season and next on his current deal, but his upcoming contract could influence Necas' negotiations. Necas' own performance will also play a key role, a strong start will increase his value, though a slow start is unlikely to significantly reduce it.
