Colorado Avalanche fans were concerned that Brock Nelson might be just a short-term addition when they acquired him at the deadline last season.

But according to a recent report, it looks like both parties are interested in extending their relationship, which would ease the sting of losing top prospect Calum Ritchie and a first-round pick in exchange for Nelson.

NHL insider confirms that this veteran forward is poised to sign an extension with the Avalanche.

Dan Mount from Last Words On Sports writes David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period provided an update on the contract negotiations between the Avalanche and Nelson, noting that both parties share a mutual interest in reaching an extension.
Nelson scored six goals and tallied 13 points in 19 games with the Avalanche. Colorado aimed for a championship but was stopped by Dallas, their Central Division rivals. Although Nelson didn't score any goals in the seven-game series, he contributed four assists for the team.
While the outcome wasn't either side hoped for, both remain focused on winning another Stanley Cup. An extension could help them achieve that shared goal.
The Avalanche have exclusive negotiating rights with Nelson until July 1. While a deal is possible, questions remain about the size of the cap hit. Colorado enters the offseason with $8.7 million in cap space but only a few roster spots left to fill before the 2025-26 season begins.
"Colorado needs to solve the problem of finding a second-line centre and Nelson could be a solution. The Avalanche need depth down the middle and extending the Warroad, Minn. native might be the easiest solution. Nelson carried a cap hit of $6 million in his previous deals with the Isles, but one wonders what his next contract may look like." -Mount

If extension talks with Nelson fall apart, the Avalanche will likely need to explore the trade market to address the vacancy at second-line center. To secure a quality replacement, GM Chris MacFarland and Colorado would possibly have to part with a valuable asset.
