Naming Patrick Roy as head coach for next season was the right move by the New York Islanders during a time of uncertainty within the organization.
Roy will remain under contract through next season as he and newly appointed general manager Mathieu Darche assess the team's future direction.
Did the Islanders make the right call in bringing back Patrick Roy as head coach?
Nestor Quixtan from Eyes On Isles writes that the Islanders have already seen a significant shakeup in management, with parting ways with Lou Lamoriello marking a major offseason move. A shift in philosophy was needed, as both the NHL club and its AHL affiliate fell short of expectations.
"While the shakeup at the helm was needed, another seismic move behind the bench could have been too much for the team to recover from in such a short span. When a major corporation makes a significant change in its management structure, investors, customers, and observers are often concerned about the direction the company is taking. A massive shakeup only happens following a major scandal." -Quixtan
That wasn't the case for the Islanders this season. What fans and media craved was clarity, and they got that with the confirmation of Roy. It had become clear that Roy and Lamoriello weren't aligned during last season, so allowing Roy to continue behind the bench after Lamoriello's departure was a logical and reassuring decision.
The Islanders head into next season with a greater sense of stability, giving free agents a clearer picture of what awaits them on Long Island.
For potential newcomers, there won't be any unexpected twists, no looming rebuild, and no drastic teardown. At least, not for now.
