NHL analyst confirms Canadiens emerge as surprise contender in Avalanche forward sweepstakes

The Montreal Canadiens may consider reuniting with a soon-to-be unrestricted free agent from the Colorado Avalanche.
According to NHL analyst Jeremy Tingly, if the Canadiens are looking to strengthen their forward group, they might consider bringing Jonathan Drouin back to Montreal this summer.

Antonio Losada from Athlon Sports writes that the 30-year-old forward is poised to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent after wrapping up a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Avalanche.

«Drouin making his way to Montreal would be quite the story, and he'd fit in nicely as a veteran winger who could help boost their lineup offensively. The Canadiens exceeded expectations last year and have turned into an up-and-coming team to watch heading into the 2025-26 season." -Tingly
Drouin signed on at a discount the past two seasons, earning $825,000 in 2023-24 and $2.5 million in 2024-25. However, Daily Faceoff projects his next contract to jump significantly, estimating a value of $5.9 million per year.
"He finished his stint with the Habs racking up 186 points in 321 games, but struggled under the pressure of playing in his home province and acknowledged those issues after leaving the franchise." -Losada
Drouin spent six seasons with the Canadiens following his acquisition from the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017.
