It is no secret the Colorado Avalanche are a top heavy team boasting some of NHL's top stars, and if they want another shot at the Stanley Cup they are going to have to rely on Martin Necas and Nathan MacKinnon providing much of the offence on the top line.
While many have been wondering if
Necas should be traded, the sample size is still too small to determine how valuable he is to the team.
Avalanche rely heavily on MacKinnon and Necas to deliver.
Katie Barlett of Mile High Sticking reports that all roads to the Avalanche's success this season go through the production between Necas and MacKinnon.
"There has been a lot of debate surrounding Martin Necas and his future with the Colorado Avalanche. While many have been calling for the Avs to trade him due to rumors surrounding his alleged dissatisfaction with his time in Denver and regarding his contract extension negotiations, the reality is that the team's regular season and postseason success hinge on him and Nathan MacKinnon rediscovering their magic from the beginning of their time together." -Barlett
Due to their speed and puck handling ability, it is going to make it a nightmare for the opposing team's defences especially when we talk zone entries. One-on-one they are dangerous and if you put too much attention on one than that gives the other space to make some plays.
"This can make it seem like it would be in the Avs' best interest to split them up on separate lines in order to spread the wealth throughout the top-6 when, in fact, the team is much more dangerous when the two of them play together. That is because the pace at which they play and think the game together makes it harder for the other team to deny them the time and space in which to operate." -Barlett
We saw this magic unfold for the pair during last year's Stanley Cup playoffs. While the Avalanche came up short the duo had most of the possession and outscored the Stars while they were on the ice.
Whether Necas ends up being dealt to another team or not, while he is on the Avalanche his chemistry with MacKinnon is paramount for the Avalanche to have another chance at the top of the mountain.
