As the next NHL season approaches, a new development has come to light revealing a shocking and unexpected career update for Colorado Avalanche star forward Martin Necas, leaving fans and analysts alike stunned.
Reports suggest
Necas has been dissatisfied with his experience in Colorado since being traded by the Carolina Hurricanes last February.
Martin Necas rocked with massive career update.
Evan Liu from Hockey Mountain High writes that if you'd told any Avalanche fan they'd be watching Necas suit up in burgundy and blue, they likely wouldn't have believed you, especially not as a result of a major trade that sent another key player away in
Mikko Rantanen.
"The Hurricanes ended up being the winners of a massive three-team trade involving the Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks. Necas joined
Jack Drury in the deal, while Mikko Rantanen went to Carolina." -Liu
Necas was undoubtedly caught off guard by the trade, especially given its magnitude from the Avalanche's standout. He made his debut on January 25, facing the Boston Bruins on the road.
Despite logging over 25 minutes, the most ice time he'd had all season, he struggled in that first outing, finishing with a -3 rating. However, he bounced back quickly thereafter.
"The 26-year-old ended up playing 30 games for the Avalanche, ending with 11 goals and 17 assists. As a new member of the top line, he got the Colorado experience of playing most of the night. He ended the year averaging 20 minutes a night, the highest of his career." -Liu
Selected 12th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Necas has historically struggled in the postseason. With Rantanen excelling, particularly in goal scoring, Necas was brought in with comparisons drawn between the two, expected to help fill the void.
In the seven-game series against the Dallas Stars, Necas recorded one goal and four assists. Meanwhile, Rantanen, now playing for Dallas following the trade, more than doubled Necas' point total during the series.
"However, all of the blame certainly didn't fall on the Czechia forward. Nonetheless, it's been rumored he hasn't loved his time in Colorado and is among the trade rumors." -Liu
The Avalanche have just one year remaining on Necas' current $6.5 million contract. Although he's eligible for an extension this summer, no new deal has been reached, despite the team already locking in players like
Josh Manson and
Parker Kelly.
Necas is bound to land a significant payday. After parting ways with Rantanen, the Avalanche now face a critical decision: pay up to keep Necas or risk coming out as the clear loser of the blockbuster trade made on January 24.
