Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon and Team Canada receive shocking news ahead of Thursday's quarter-final game against Denmark.
Horvat has appeared in all 6 of Canada's games, contributing 4 goals, 2 of them game winners, and 4 assists.
Sportsnet reported earlier that forward Porter Martone was added to Team Canada's roster on Tuesday following the announcement that Horvat will be forced to miss the remainder of the tournament.
The 18-year-old standout, projected to be a top-five selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft in June, made his debut in Canada's 5-3 victory over Sweden, recording 11 shifts and a total of 8:45 of ice time.
Martone, who plays for the OHL's Brampton Steelheads, was called up after Horvat was sidelined with a tournament-ending lower-body injury.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 208 pounds, Martone joins a star-studded Canadian roster featuring
Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and fellow Peterborough native
Barrett Hayton.
Canada currently tops Group A with a 6-1 record. They're set to face Denmark in the quarter-finals on Thursday at 12:20pm MT in Stockholm, Sweden.
This will mark the 10th meeting between Canada and Denmark at the IIHF World Championship, with Canada holding the advantage, having won seven of the previous matchups.
