The Colorado Avalanche's handling of Mikko Rantanen quickly turned messy, with contract disputes leading to his trade to the Dallas Stars, who then eliminated them in the first round. The team is determined to avoid a repeat scenario with Martin Necas.

Necas is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, but we could see an extension signed before that.

The same mistake cannot happen twice for Martin Necas and the Colorado Avalanche.

Ryan O'Hara of Mile High Hockey reported on the unfolding situation surrounding Martin Necas' contract extension and outlined potential strategies for the Avalanche to retain the star winger.
"This isn't just about money; it's about being on a team that gives you the best chance of winning a championship. And quite frankly, Colorado needs Necas as much as he needs them." -O'Hara

Necas isn't solely chasing a big paycheck, he's looking for a team that maximizes his talents. He's not a physical player; he's fast, intelligent, and a dangerous puck carrier.
That makes Colorado an ideal fit. The Avalanche emphasize high-speed offense and calculated risks, trusting their skating ability to recover when needed.
Plus, Necas gets the chance to play alongside two of the best players in the world.
"Currently, Necas is an exceptionally talented player, just shy of entering the league's elite echelon, yet he appears poised to make that leap. Last season, he established a career high with 83 points, comprising 27 goals and 56 assists. Considering his consistent year-over-year progression and the fact that 2024‑25 marked his apex to date, it is entirely plausible to anticipate Necas producing between 92 and 111 points in the upcoming season." -O'Hara

The Avalanche can afford to be patient with Necas and reassess by Christmas.
He appears motivated and focused regardless of whether he has an extension, so there's no immediate pressure for the team to finalize a deal.
