The Colorado Avalanche held the first selection in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft and chose defenseman Conor Timmins from Saint Catharines, Ontario.

Timmins was with the Avalanche from the 2019-20 season through 2020-21, appearing in only 33 games and recording seven assists, all during his second season with the team.

Former Avalanche top prospect can't catch a break.

Graham Tiedtke from Mile High Sticking writes that Timmins' time with the Avalanche lasted only two years, leading to a trade that brought Darcy Kuemper to Denver. Kuemper played just one season with Colorado but played a key role in the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Afterward, he signed a contract with the Washington Capitals as a free agent, leaving Colorado as a Stanley Cup champion.
"Timmins was just traded once again, this time from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo is just about 30 miles south of Saint Catherines, so I can imagine that was somewhat of a relief to Timmins. He can live in the area in which he's from, which can be a great feeling for some players." -Tiedtke

Now 26, Timmins is expected to form a defensive duo with the former Avalanche first-rounder Bowen Byram. Byram was traded to Buffalo last year in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt but eventually lost favour after a period of disappointing performance.
"Unfortunately, Timmins hasn't found a steady home since his entrance into the NHL. His longest tenure was with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he spent three years. He's now on his fifth team." -Tiedtke

That's often the reality for many players, few are guaranteed successes. Even first-round picks can be uncertain, and some never actually play for the team that drafted them. Hopefully Timmins will find a long-term role with the Sabres moving forward.
