NHL hits leader Kiefer Sherwood is a valuable asset for any team, including the Vancouver Canucks. With him in a contract year, there are clear ways he could boost his chances of securing a lucrative deal.
Everyone has seen all too well what
contract drama can do to a team, and to a player specifically.
Kiefer Sherwood eyes big pay day as he continues to prove his value for the Vancouver Canucks.
Ben Kuzma of Yahoo Sports spoke on how much of a key role Sherwood plays and how his current contract has him extremely undervalued, which can result in a much bigger compensation on his next contract.
"He's coming off an impressive career year with an NHL-record 462 hits, and 19 goals, including his first career hat trick. He was also third among club forwards in penalty-kill time on the league's third-ranked unit, and a zest to be his best has never wavered." -Kuzma
For a player earning just $1.5M annually, those are solid numbers, and Sherwood has made sure he has strong representation heading into his next contract talks.
"However, the negotiating dance can be difficult with purposeful pivots before management and player representatives find a common stride. It's why he switched agents in late August after earlier summer rumblings of possible extension went quiet. Sherwood left Allain Roy of Roy Sports Group and hired Rich Evans and Judd Moldaver of Wasserman Hockey to push the contract process." -Kuzma
Canucks general manager Patrick Allvin doesn't seem too concerned with Sherwood's extension but maybe he should be.
Sherwood presents a lot of value and if he doesn't commit to him soon, maybe Sherwood will feel more appreciated elsewhere.
"We like Kiefer a lot and he fits in with the group, but there's no rush. We continue to talk. I have a fairly good relationship with most of the agents, so nothing is really going to change here.» -Allvin
The former Avalanche player brings plenty of value and the Canucks have benefited from his contributions on a relatively low contract, but that situation could change next season.
