An NHL insider has delivered a surprising update on Martin Necas' extension talks, and it's news that Colorado Avalanche fans are unlikely to be happy about.

Necas becomes a free agent after this season and is waiting patiently to gauge his options.

NHL insider drops big update concerning Martin Necas.

Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic and TSN, it appears the Avalanche and Necas haven't yet delved into the finer details of their contract negotiations.
Necas and the Avalanche have been in touch, and the team has made it clear they want to keep him, a point Necas himself mentioned on the opening day of training camp last week.
However, as a pending unrestricted free agent, he and the team have yet to exchange figures on what a potential new contract might entail. This appears to be by design.
"There's no question Colorado has communicated clearly to the Necas camp that it wants to extend him at some point this season. And there have been preliminary talks. But my sense is that they haven't yet gotten into the nitty-gritty of exchanging offers and counteroffers.

It sounds like they'll let the season get started and see how things are going before taking those discussions to the next level. There's lot of time between now and July 1." -LeBrun

LeBrun added that Necas probably won't be among the first players from the deep class of pending UFAs to sign a new deal, which make sense given the circumstance.
All summer the talk has been that many players are holding off on extensions because no one wants to be the first to set the market with the salary cap on the rise.
"For example, what if Necas signed for $9 million and then Adrian Kempe gets $11 million+? It wouldn't look great for the Avs forward and his agent.

Also, Necas had his first point per game season in 2024-25 and he just missed the mark with the Avs after the trade for Mikko Rantanen. It's wise for the Avalanche to see how he looks in another 20-30 games with the team before deciding his value." -Deen

Still, it seems inevitable that the two sides will eventually find common ground on a deal that suits both.
We'll just have to wait and see how it unfolds.
