The Avalanche have been pretty quiet throughout the offseason, but now, Colorado's latest reveal gives fans a reason to get excited.
New details have emerged concerning rumoured Avalanche third jersey.
Phil Hecken from Uni Watch writes that after wrapping up their time in Canada, the Quebec Nordiques relocated to Colorado and rebranded as the Avalanche ahead of the 1995-96 NHL season. While the team largely moved on from its Quebec City origins, occasional calls persisted over the years to bring back the classic Nordiques uniforms for a nostalgic throwback.
The Nordiques-inspired uniforms were widely praised, but when the NHL rolled out Reverse Retro 2.0 a few years later, the Avalanche opted for a fauxback paying tribute to a past Colorado franchise instead of revisiting the Nordiques look. Still, the sharp blue Nordiques design left a lasting impression, and renewed calls emerged for the team to adopt a blue version as part of their regular uniform rotation.
Now, according to recent reports, fans hoping for a blue-Nordiques-style jersey might finally be getting their wish, as the Avalanche appear posed to bring back the iconic look back in some form.
"The latter tweet references a report from Adrian Dater (Adrian Dater covers the Colorado Avalanche for the Denver Post), who writes that the threads are 'coming back'. But Fanatics doesn't do the RR program (that was an adidas thing), so if they are coming back, they would most likely be as an alternate. So that's at least two separate reports indicating the 'lanche will play as the 'diques this upcoming season." -Hecken
Introducing an authentic throwback kersey as an alternative would arguably make the most sense for the Avalanche, especially considering how other teams, like the Carolina Hurricanes, have successfully embraced their history by donning uniforms from their previous incarnations in different cities.
Of course, such a move could stir some backlash in Quebec, much like the Whalers fans voiced their frustration with the Hurricanes, but ultimately, it's still the same franchise paying homage to its roots.
"Now that Fanatics has had the NHL contract for a year, and presumably everything has gone swimmingly, it will be interesting to see what new thirds clubs will introduce this season. While several teams had third sweaters last season, many teams did not." -Hecken
With all NHL teams expected to have third jerseys this season, it's entirely plausible that the Avalanche could roll out a Nordiques throwback this fall, especially given the renewed fan interest and past success of the design.
