The Colorado Avalanche appear to have ignited a new rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs after taking a bold and brutal shot at the team in a recent social media post.

The Maple Leafs were on the receiving end of a jab from the Avalanche's social media team, who resurfaced on embarrassing moment from a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Avalanche spark new rivalry with Maple Leafs.

Ryan Smitheram from Maple Leafs Daily writes that the Avalanche's social media team recently launched a summer "Haiku For You" series, crafting three-line poems for all 31 NHL teams and sharing them on X.
On Tuesday, their haiku for the Hurricanes took a pointed jab at one of the most embarrassing moments in recent Maple Leafs history.
"E-bug victory,' read the opening line of the poem, a clear reminder to the hockey world, and especially Leafs Nation, of the infamous night in February 2020 when the Maple Leafs were defeated by the Hurricanes with emergency backup goalie and Toronto Marlies employee David Ayres backstopping the win.
"After both Hurricanes goalies, James Reimer and Peter Mrazek (also two former Leafs goalies, ironically) were injured in the first and second periods of that game on February 22, 2020, the Hurricanes had to call upon Ayres, who was listed as the emergency backup goaltender, to enter the game midway through the second period." -Smitheram

After surrendering two goals on his first two shots faced, Ayres rebounded to stop the final eight attempts, helping the Hurricanes secure an improbable 6-3 victory.
"Not reminded of that embarrassing effort enough already, exactly 1,956 days after one of the most embarrassing efforts from the Leafs in recent memory, the Avs made sure to remind everyone of it with their haiku on Wednesday." -Smitheram

It wouldn't be surprising if this sparked the beginning of a new rivarly, but with the two contenders playing in separate conferences, there's a good chance it fizzles out as the dog days of summer drag on.
