Dallas Stars' cap crunch karma strikes for targeting Colorado Avalanche in trade

The Dallas Stars' current stem directly from locking up former Colorado Avalanche Mikko Rantanen to a hefty contract extension.
When Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland arranged the original trade with the Carolina Hurricanes in late January, he likely never imagined Rantanen would eventually land with the Stars.

Nestor Quixtan from Mile High Sticking writes that the Rantanen trade depended on securing a contract extension before it was finalized. He agreed to an eight-year deal worth $96 million, carrying a $12 million cap hit.
"The deal is essentially the same as what the Avalanche had originally offered before the trade. Plus, Rantanen's contract in Dallas is purportedly lower than what the Maple Leafs had offered." -Quixtan
Dallas proceeded with signing Rantanen, but now they're facing a tough situation. According to PuckPedia, the Stars have under $5 million in cap space, far too little to retain all their upcoming free agents.
"The situation has gotten so dire for the Stars that they are reportedly shopping Jason Robertson, as Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal reported on Tuesday." -Quixtan
On top of that the fallout from the Peter DeBoer and Jake Oettinger drama during the Western Conference Final against the Edmonton Oilers has only added to the Stars' woes. Even if Dallas lets all their current free agents walk, including captain Jamie Benn, the $5 million in cap space won't come close to being enough to field a competitive team next season.
Maybe the Stars just had some bad luck this season, but having spend a lot of time around sports and business, I know that when teams make moves to undermine their rivals, they need to trend carefully.
