Fans were left stunned when the Colorado Avalanche's divisional rival, the Utah Mammoth, decided to part ways with their award-winning goaltender, Connor Ingram, trading him to the Edmonton Oilers in a move that sent shockwaves across the division.
The Oilers were long expected to make a major splash in goal this offseason, and they've done just that by acquiring Ingram from the Mammoth.
Utah Mammoth have officially moved on from Connor Ingram.
Tom Banks from House of Hockey writes that for months now, fans have been expecting the Oilers to make a change in net, but for the most part, Stan Bowman has remained loyal to the duo of
Stuart Skinner and
Calvin Pickard.
"With the regular season approaching, it appeared as though the Oilers roster was set, but on Wednesday, they made a surprising trade, landing a third goaltender to compete for a spot in the NHL." -Banks
According to reports, the Oilers have acquired Ingram, giving them added depth and competition for the backup role, while Skinner is expected to retain his position as the likely starter.
"In the deal, Utah are retaining $800,000 of his $1.9 million salary this season, with Frank Seravalli noting that the deal for the Mammoth will see them acquire future considerations." -Banks
The surprising aspect of this trade is that Ingram had just been placed on waivers and reassigned to the AHL by the Mammoth.
However, with the Oilers likely needing the Mammoth to retain salary in the deal, this move was probably the best course of action for Oilers' management.
"One other aspect of this move is the fact that Ingram has won the Masterton Award, one of the most respected trophies in the NHL, and whether or not he brings his best on the ice, he'll bring sportsmanship and leadership to this Oilers locker room." -Banks
Looking ahead, the Oilers are set for a battle over the backup goalie spot. While Ingram will begin his Edmonton tenure with the Bakersfield Condors, it's likely that if either goaltender struggles, he could make his way back to the NHL sooner rather than later.
