The Colorado Avalanche are keeping a close eye as their division rival, the Vegas Golden Knights, continue to lead the race for former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Erik Karlsson in a potential blockbuster trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Golden Knights, already active in the trade market this offseason, have now been linked to Penguins' Erik Karlsson according to Sportsnet's Sonny Sachdeva.

Golden Knights reportedly closing in on Erik Karlsson.

Tom Banks from Hockey Unplugged writes that Sachdeva reports that the Golden Knights are among five teams well-positioned to pursue the former Norris Trophy winner. Considering their interest in Calgary Flames' Rasmus Andersson, it's logical they might target other defenseman this offseason.
Penguins' GM Kyle Dubas isn't expected to get a big return in any trade with the Penguins this season, which is reportedly why their veteran trio hasn't been moved yet. If a deal happens with the Golden Knights, Dubas likely won't be impressed either.
Josh Yohe: Re Erik Karlsson: "The Penguins are willing to retain some of his salary"; "trading him remains complicated'; his "value around the NHL varies widely" - The Athletic (7/28)
For the Penguins' future, trading Karlsson now makes sense to gain assets and clear cap space. If the Golden Knights view him as a key playoff addition, expect them to aggressively pursue him. Karlsson has also been linked to the Senators, Hurricanes, Stars, and Red Wings.
Ultimately, Karlsson's best days are behind him, and the Penguins will likely need to retain a significant portion of his salary to facilitate a deal. But if they're motivated and Vegas stays in the mix, don't be surprised to see a trade come together in the near future.
