According to the latest development, Colorado Avalanche star defenseman Samuel Girard may be closing in on a new destination, as trade rumours surrounding his future continue to gain momentum heading into upcoming season.
Girard's name has been in the
rumour mill for over a year now.
Samuel Girard may have found his next home.
Elias Edmonson from Habs Fanatics writes that Avalanche insider Aarif Deen has just reported a significant update involving 27-year-old Quebec-born defenseman.
"I still stand by the thought that the team had and continues to have plans to trade [Sam] Girard" -Deen
Deen also noted that the Avalanche have concrete plans to move Girard, and given his Quebec roots, the Montreal Canadiens were quickly linked as a potential destination.
The 27-year-old blueliner carries a sizable cap hit and, with chatter picking up again this summer, Colorado may eventually decide the time is right to cash in, whether that's during the season or next offseason.
Girard stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 170 pounds. Originally selected 47th overall by the Nashville Predators in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft, Girard has accumulated 223 points, including 34 goals over 548 career NHL games.
"Girard has also added a solid 28 points in 67 NHL playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup with the Avs in 2022.
He earns $5 million per year through 2027, so his contract is quite reasonable, and he recorded 24 points in 73 games during the 2024-25 season." -Edmonson
We'll have to wait and see how things unfold as the new season approaches.
