According to recent reports, the Edmonton Oilers are closing in on a potential blockbuster trade that would see them acquire Colorado Avalanche star goaltender Scott Wedgewood, a move aimed at bolstering the Oilers' shaky goaltending situation ahead of the upcoming season.

The Avalanche acquired Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Justus Annunen and a fifth-round pick earlier this season.

Tristin McKinstry from Heavy.com writes that Edmonton has yet to address its goaltending situation this offseason. As it stands, Stuart Skinner remains the projected starter. Backing him up is veteran journeyman Calvin Pickard, who has shown flashes of stability but has largely struggled with the same inconsistencies that have plagues the Oilers' crease in recent years.
"If the Oilers want to win the Stanley Cup, though, they need to upgrade their goaltending. And there's an intriguing possibility out there for Edmonton. Heavy.com is proposing the following trade between the Oilers and Colorado Avalanche." -McKinstry

The proposed trade would see the Oilers acquiring Wedgewood in exchange for Pickard and a 2026 fourth-round pick.
"Wedgewood has bounced around the NHL throughout his seven-year career. However, he has been rather solid anytime he's been given a chance. This past season saw him split the year between the Avalanche and Nashville Predators. Overall, he finished with a .908 save percentage in 24 games." -McKinstry

Wedgewood has never been considered a dominant presence in net, but he's proven to be a reliable backup throughout his career. He holds a career .906 save percentage and has recorded a .910 or better save percentage with three different teams, showing he can deliver steady performances when called upon.
After the Oilers' run to the Stanley Cup Final, the team's general manager Stan Bowman spoke to the media and credited goaltending as one of the key factors behind their deep postseason push.
«In three of the four rounds, we had better goaltending than our opponent. You look at (Darcy) Kuemper, (Adin) Hill and (Jake) Oettinger, our goalies were better than theirs in each of those series. I think that's the reason we went to the Final. And then, it flipped." -Bowman

He also noted his intention to evaluate the team's goaltending situation over the summer. But with no move materializing thus far, it's possible for Oilers are prepared to enter the 2025-26 season with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard as their goaltending tandem once again.
