Avalanche rival hit hard as all-star forward suffers huge setback before season
Colorado Avalanche divisional rival Dallas Stars are reeling after all-star forward Jamie Benn suffered a serious injury setback just before the start of the regular season, raising concerns about how the team will cope without one of its key offensive leaders.
The Dallas Stars will be without their captain for the next month.
Jamie Benn won't be ready to start the season with Dallas.
On Thursday, Sportsnet reported that the Stars confirmed that Benn will undergo surgery for a collapsed lung, a condition diagnosed during Tuesday's preseason matchup against the Minnesota Wild.
The team says Benn is expected to fully recover and will undergo a reevaluation in four weeks.
The 36-year-old winger tallied 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists) over 80 games last season. Hailing from Victoria, B.C., Benn is entering his 17th NHL season, all with the Dallas Stars.
Over his career, Benn has accumulated 956 points (399 goals, 557 assists) in 1,192 regular-season games, along with 80 points (28 goals, 52 assists) in 120 playoff contests.

The Stars have exceeded 100 points in each of the past three regular season and reached the Western Conference Final each time.
Despite this setback, Benn's leadership and proven track record make him a pivotal figure for the Stars whenever he returns to the ice in full form.
