The Colorado Avalanche haven't exactly kicked off the offseason with a bang.

After offloading Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to Columbus to free up some much-needed cap space last week, it seemed like an exciting move was on the horizon.

Avalanche GM still has big plans this summer.

Will Petersen from Denver Sports writes that at that point, the Avalanche had close to $9 million in cap space to work with. But with all due respect to Parker Kelly and Brent Burns, the past few days have been far from thrilling. The team has lost Coyle, Wood, Jonathan Drouin, and Ryan Lindgren, and so far, GM Chris MacFarland's move haven't exactly sent shockwaves through the NHL.
Kelly is a solid addition for the fourth line, and at 40, time will tell what veteran defenseman Brent Burns still has to offer. A few other minor transactions have trimmed the cap space further, leaving the Avalanche with just over $4 million to work with.
"This can't be the plan, right? MacFarland and team president Joe Sakic need to make a big move. That would likely involve a trade, bringing in a borderline star player and ditching the contracts of Ross Colton ($4 million), Samuel Girard ($5 million), Josh Manson ($4.5 million) or even Martin Necas ($6.5 million). I tossed out the idea of acquiring Sidney Crosby, which would certainly be a major splash. Nathan MacKinnon thinks Crosby leaving the Penguins is 'fake news,' but MacFarland needs to at least make the call. That move would get fans fired up." -Petersen

Even if a blockbuster move like Crosby isn't in the cards, the Avalanche still have holes to patch up on their third and fourth lines. It's uncertain whether anyone from the Colorado Eagles is ready to step into a consistent NHL role just yet.
Still, the silence from MacFarland and Sakic has been unusual and almost unsettling. For a front office that pulled off nine trades last season alone, this level of inactivity feels off-brand.
