The Colorado Avalanche's divisional rival, the Winnipeg Jets, received crushing news regarding superstar forward Jonathan Toews, putting a cloud over the team just days before their season opener on Thursday.
Jonathan Toews projected to miss the Winnipeg Jets' season opener.
Kyle Morton from Daily Faceoff writes that when the Jets revealed their Opening Day roster, both Jonathan Toews and captain
Adam Lowry were listed as injured and non-roster.
Toews, the longtime Chicago Blackhawks captain and three-time Stanley Cup champion, hasn't played in an NHL game since the 2022-23 season.
After stepping away from hockey to address a health condition, he decided to make a comeback this year, officially signing a contract with his hometown Winnipeg Jets on July 1, following an initial agreement reached on June 20.
"It's set to be both a feel-good story and a potentially massively impactful addition for Winnipeg, a team that has found itself in contention in recent years but has struggled to find a solution behind first-line center
Mark Scheifele." -Morton
Head coach Scott Arniel labeled Toews as day-to-day on October 2 after he tweaked something, leaving hope that the absence won't keep him off the ice for long.
The Jets are set to kick off their 2025-26 season at home against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.
