It didn't take MacKinnon long to make history this season, as the superstar forward wasted no time rewriting the Avalanche record books.
Nathan MacKinnon passes Joe Sakic for all-time Avalache points.
With an assist on
Martin Necas' second-period goal against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, Nathan MacKinnon officially passed Joe Sakic for the most points in Colorado Avalanche franchise history.
The helper marked the 1,016th point of MacKinnon's career, achieved in the very first game of his 13th NHL season with Colorado.
Since being selected first overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2013 NHL Draft, MacKinnon has tallied 367 goals and 649 assists for 1,016 points across 871 regular-season games.
MacKinnon entered Tuesday's contest tied with Hall of Famer Joe Sakic in both games played and points, as Sakic amassed 1,015 points across 870 career games with the Avalanche.
It's important to note that the record MacKinnon surpassed only includes stats from the 1995-96 season onward, when the franchise relocated from Quebec to Colorado.
Sakic's full career totals, 1,641 points over 20 seasons with the Nordiques and Avalanche combined, still place him well ahead overall, meaning MacKinnon has some work to do before he can match his former captain's franchise legacy.
Either way, MacKinnon's latest milestone only cements his place among the greatest players in Avalanche history.
