The New York Islanders head into the offseason facing plenty of uncertainty surrounding their roster. Following a playoff miss, the team has significant work ahead in strengthening its talent pool.
However, the Islanders caught a major break by landing the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. They're expected to select standout prospects Matthew Schaefer, who could become a key piece on the blue line in the future.
Trouble is brewing for Avalanche divisional rival.
With the Winnipeg Jets signingJonathan Toews earlier today, they might be preparing to lose a big part of their team in free agency.
Matt Levine from Athlon Sports writes that one potential name to keep an eye on is Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets, who is expected to be one of the more sought-after players available. NHL insider Arthur Staple of The Athletic has connected Ehlers to the Islanders, naming New York as a possible destination.
"The Isles' lack of playmakers on the wing, especially those who can skate a bit, is pretty evident. Outside of Marner, there aren't really any potential UFAs with Ehlers' skill set; signing him would allow Mathew Barzal to move back to center." -Staple
Bringing in a player like Ehlers could be a smart addition for this Islanders team. He's been a consistent performer for the Jets throughout his career and is coming off a strong season.
"The veteran scored 24 goals and 39 assists for Winnipeg during the regular season. Ehlers then scored five goals and two assists over eight playoff games for the Jets." -Levine
Adding Ehlers would be a valuable boost for the Islanders, providing increased flexibiltiy throughout their lineup. With the right offseason moves, this New York squad has the potential to become a sleeper threat in the Eastern Conference.
