The Colorado Avalanche have not had a very memorable off-season. We can either predict that they are comfortable with where they are at, or they may have some blockbuster moves planned with a star studded free agency next summer?

We could see some franchise defining scenarios happen next summer as the salary cap increases and some of the NHL's best enter the free agency market.

Colorado's silence could result in a lot of noise later down the road.

Brennan Vogt of Hockey Mountain High dove deeper into why the Avalanche have been so reserved in making any crazy moves this summer. With the NHL season looming closer and closer, fans are scratching their heads at the lack of activity from the head office.
"What is the hold-up on any major moves with the Colorado Avalanche this summer? The team re-signed forward Brock Nelson to a lucrative deal and gained Brent Burns in free agency. But that is about it. The Avalanche have made no real splash over the summer, and there could be a few reasons as to why." -Vogt

However maybe there is reason behind the lack madness we are experiencing. The team could just be that comfortable and confident with their roster. While they do have a lack of depth, the top end of their lineup is so dominant they might just ride their coat tails off into the sunset.
Injury uncertainty could also play a role. If Landeskog doesn't hold up and is put on LTIR that will open the cap space needed for a bigger move.
The two more plausible reasons however, are the Avalanche want to test some young talent and they are holding out for something much bigger.
"Currently, the bottom-six is not complete. Young talent on two-way contracts may seize the day. Players like Ivan Ivan, Gavin Brindley, Jason Polin, Matt Stienburg, and Tye Felhaber may get extended looks by the Avalanche. The advantage of this is that they all come in under one million dollars each. If they were to sign a veteran, chances are their price tag would cost them even more." -Vogt

"We can only guess why the Avalanche has not been very active in the market. The free agency market this summer was not the greatest, so that could also be part of it. Next summer, with the salary cap increasing and big stars hitting the market like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, and Artemi Panarin, we can only imagine that there will be a lot more activity in July." -Vogt

It's obvious that the second of the two reasons is more exciting, adding one more superstar to join MacKinnon and Makar would make for some must-watch TV every time the Avalanche play. Unfortunately, that can only happen a year from now and the Avalanche need to focus on maximizing this season with their two superstars in the prime of their careers.
