With free agency set to open on Tuesday, the Avalanche, like several other teams, are aiming to bolster their roster.
While GM Chris MacFarland hasn't committed to aggressively pursuing the UFA market, preferring to build through trades, there are notable free agent options available if the Avalanche decide to make a splash.
Avalanche eyeing two defensemen in free agency.
Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that a player that the Avalanche could target is Vladislav Gavrikov. Standing 6'3" and weighing 220 pounds, with a left-handed shot, there's no doubt that Gavrikov could provide a very strong presence on the blue line. Take another look at those numbers again, and then consider this statement from GM Chris MacFarland.
«If you're just looking at the obvious, to continue the left-right theme, a left shot would go a long way. And if he was 6'3, 220 lbs and skates like the wind and pounds people, we'd love to find that. But those are unicorns.» -MacFarland
The matching height and weight might just be a coincidence, but it's definitely amusing, and something to look out for. If Gavrikov isn't an overpay, he could be the perfect fit for the Avalanche.
Conor Lively from Mile High Sticking writes that Brandon Tanev would fit the Avalanche roster perfectly.
"High energy, strong two-way play, and a penchant for annoying the opposition are things that the Avalanche have desperately needed. Tanev does what
Miles Wood was supposed to do. Just imagine a Tanev - Drury - O'Connor line in the playoffs. That would be all kinds of fun to see." -Lively
Tanev's prior contract was a six-year deal worth $3.5 million annually, but he's unlikely to command that salary on this year's market. AFP Analytics projects his value to be just over $2 million.
