A NHL insider has revealed a surprising new twist in the ongoing trade rumours surrounding Sidney Crosby, suggesting a potential blockbuster deal that could see the Penguins' captain land with the Colorado Avalanche.

Nestor Quixtan from Heavy.com writes that trade rumours surrounding Crosby have surfaced on and off for nearly a year. The speculation stems from the Pittsburgh Penguins' looming rebuild and the idea that Crosby may want to finish his career competing for a Stanley Cup with a legitimate contender.
"That said, NHL analyst Mike Rupp dropped the idea that the Penguins could trade Sidney Crosby to the Colorado Avalanche. During an appearance on NHL Network published on July 28 on X, Rupp discussed the likelihood of the Penguins trading Crosby." -Quixtan
While Rupp didn't suggest a trade was imminent, he did emphasize that if the Penguins were to move Crosby, the Avalanche would be the likely destination. Based on Rupp's perspective, here's what a potential trade package might include...
The Avalanche would land Crosby in exchange for forward Martin Necas and prospect defenseman Sean Behrens, along with a couple first-round draft picks.
"The return for Sidney Crosby includes Martin Necas, who has allegedly been disenchanted with his time in Colorado. A piece in the Denver Gazette from July 19 echoed that idea. That's why Necas could be part of the return for Crosby. Plus, Necas is set to become a UFA at the end of this upcoming season. So, if there's a team that could pay Necas his reported $10 million price tag, it's Pittsburgh." -Quixtan
Rupp also noted that the Penguins might prioritize acquiring draft picks in any potential deal. That would likely mean Colorado's next two second-rounders, or possibly a first, would be headed to Pittsburgh. To round out the package, the trade could also feature one of the Avalanche's top prospects, such as defenseman Sean Behrens.
In the end, the Avalanche could be willing to pay a steep price for just one final season of Sidney Crosby, all in pursuit of capturing another Stanley Cup title before he calls it a career.
