Necas is predicted to outscore former Avalanche star
Mikko Rantanen this season and in the playoffs.
Latest report puts Avalanche's Martin Necas in the spotlight this NHL season.
Katie Bartlett from Mile High Sticking writes that both Rantanen and Necas are elite wingers, though Rantanen has consistently played at an even higher level, particularly over the past few seasons.
Still, there's plenty of reason to think Necas could outshine him this year.
Necas is coming off a career-high 83 points, just shy of Rantanen's 88. Despite Necas' inconsistency and Rantanen's steadiness, this season could prove how the Avalanche came out on top in the Rantanen blockbuster.
"While Rantanen had the benefit of developing within the Avalanche's run-and-gun system, Necas was limited within the Hurricanes' defense-first identity.
His lack of defensive prowess meant less ice time and lower deployment than other star wingers on the team like
Andrei Svechnikov and
Seth Jarvis. The trade to the Avs means that Necas will, for the first time, have the opportunity to play for a team whose game plan aligns with his skillset." -Bartlett
Necas' speed, vision, playmaking, and sneaky scoring make him a perfect fit for Colorado's fast, possession-driven game.
"Then there is the matter of playing alongside
Nathan MacKinnon and
Cale Makar. While Rantanen still has high-end teammates on the Stars, the top two guys for the Avs are a cut above.
MacKinnon is one of the few players on the team that can match Necas' speed. The need to account for both of them will create more space in which they can operate. This matched skillset, increased ice time, and opportunities in which to create will lead to a lot of goals." -Bartlett
Necas has yet to sign a contract extension with the Avalanche. Players often have career years in the final season of their deals, and Necas has long aimed to prove he's among the league's elite wingers.
Surpassing last season's stats and setting a new career high could go a long way toward securing a lucrative contract, ideally before next summer.
"Obviously, many factors will have to tilt in Necas' favor, but the stage is set for him to have a big year and to outperform Rantanen on the stats sheet." -Bartlett
We're in for a season packed with compelling storylines.
