New development could change the future of Avalanche's top defensive prospect
A recent development could have a major impact on the future of Colorado Avalanche's top defensive prospect, Saige Weinstein, potentially shaping the next stage of his career.
Weinstein, undrafted, signed an entry-level contract with the Avalanche in October 2023 after impressing during training camp.
New report reveals stunning career update on Avalanche top defensive prospect Saige Weinstein.
Jess Shelton from Mile High Hockey writes that since signing, Weinstein returned to the WHL for two seasons to finish his junior eligibility with the Spokane Chiefs.
In the most recent season, he played 65 games, scoring three goals and adding 24 assists. The expectation is that Weinstein will turn pro this year and potentially join the Colorado Eagles. However, with the Eagles' blue line in Loveland fairly crowded to start the season, it wouldn't be surprising to see Weinstein spend the year with the Utah Grizzlies in the ECHL.
"Throughout his career thus far, Weinstein has been a player who uses his size at six-foot-one with physicality but can activate in games, making him a valuable option for teammates and other players during games." -Shelton
It's easy to understand why Colorado values Weinstein so highly, given his kill set. He fits the mold of a 'Colorado Avalanche-style defenseman,' someone who can step into the pro game, contribute physically, and remain responsible in his own end.
"As for what's next for Weinstein, as previously mentioned, the expectation is that he'll begin playing pro and hopefully join the Colorado Eagles for the upcoming 2025-26 season if he's not pushed to Utah due to veterans in the AHL ahead of him on the depth chart.
As he makes the jump from the WHL to pro hockey, hopefully he can keep up his play and continue to develop as a player. He has all the right tools right now to be a perfect Avalanche defenseman; it's just a matter of continuing to develop and build upon those skills as a player." -Shelton
If Weinstein continues on this path, I could see him becoming a legitimate option for the Avalanche's defensive core in the future, and I'm eager to watch his development and growth unfold.
