The latest report reveals that superstar Nathan MacKinnon has a surprising habit that ends up costing the Colorado Avalanche a staggering $100,000 every single year, raising eyebrows across the NHL.
MacKinnon revealed that he goes through roughly 400 sticks each season, far more than the average NHL player.
MacKinnon is costing the Avalanche way too much money.
Jack Sutherland from House of Hockey writes that most NHL players go through roughly 100 sticks per season, MacKinnon blows that number out of the water.
He revealed that he uses four times as many sticks as the average player and joked that his trainers probably aren't thrilled about it.
Earlier this week, MacKinnon joined a Q&A session with Cwench Hydration and revealed the he goes through at least 400 sticks per season, much to the chagrin of his trainers.
"My trainers don't like me very much, probably 400." -MacKinnon
MacKinnon also shared what career path he might have pursued if he hadn't chosen professional hockey.
"Kayaking, growing up I did competitive kayaking, it's kind of a random thing, but here it's, like, really big. So, my parents would just drop me off and I would kayak all day. I got decent." -MacKinnon
It's no surprise that NHL players can go through at least 100 sticks in a season. Today, all sticks are made of composite materials, as no player uses the older wooden sticks, which were far more durable.
Sticks today frequently break or wear down, and elite players like MacKinnon often rely on professional gear sponsorships. MacKinnon uses Bauer equipment, while stars like
Connor McDavid and
Sidney Crosby are sponsored by CCM Hockey.
