Colorado Avalanche legend Brandon Yip shocked the sports world Wednesday by announcing his retirement from professional hockey on Wednesday.

At 40 years old, after spending the past eight seasons in the KHL, Yip has officially retired from professional hockey.

Avalanche legend Brandon Yip announces his retirement.

Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that in the season following Joe Sakic's retirement, the Avalanche saw a wave of rookie step up in their NHL debuts. The playoff-bound squad leaned on 18-year-old Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly, along with contributions from Chris Stewart, T.J. Giliardi, David Jones, and the breakout of 24-year-old Yip.
"The Avalanche drafted Yip in the eighth round of the 2004 NHL draft. They actually did a great job developing him into a solid forward over the following five years. He spent one more year in the BCHL before playing all four college seasons at BU before signing his entry-level contract." -Deen

Yip opened the 2009-10 campaign sidelined with injury but cracked the Avalanche lineup by December. He netted his first career goal in the third game and followed it up with a two-goal effort against the Detroit Red Wings in just his sixth. In over 32 games, he totalled 11 goals and 19 assists.
"His points-per-game didn't quite match up in his second season. Yip finished a tough 2010-11 Avalanche season with a career-high 12 goals, 10 assists, and 22 points in 72 games. He only played 10 more games for the Avalanche after that before being placed on waivers and claimed by the Nashville Predators." -Deen

Yip also spent time with the Phoenix Coyotes and later attended Anaheim Ducks training camp on a PTO in 2014, though he didn't secure a contract.
He went on to enjoy a successful run in the KHL with Kunlun Red Star and represented China at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
