At his introductory press conference with the Vegas Golden Knights, former Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner inadvertently revealed that Vegas players engaged in tampering.
Vegas acquired Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Nicolas Roy, and signed an eight-year contract extension through the 2032-33 season worth an average annual value of $12,000,000.
Marner drops the ball on Vegas' tampering allegations.
Ryan Smitheram from Maple Leafs Daily writes that following reports that the Leafs and Golden Knights were negotiating a sing-and-trade deal for Marner, it later emerged that these talks might have stemmed from tampering accusations the leafs made against the Golden Knights. In the end, the trade was finalized and announced before free agency began, and the tampering allegations quietly faded away.
However, during his introductory press conference, Marner unintentionally hinted that the tampering allegations might hold some truth when he mentioned having conversations about Vegas with his new teammates Adin Hill and Mark Stone while they played together at the 4-Nations Faceoff.
"Just talking to Adin Hill and Stoney (Mark Stone) at the 4-Nations about the living style and everything" -Marner
Marner later tried to walk back his comments, claiming the conversations weren't about playing in Vegas but simply about getting to know the guys. Still, Leafs Nation is reading between the lines, suggesting that this may have been the moment he mentally checked out of Toronto.
"The 28-year-old's comments about discussing Vegas during the 4-Nations Faceoff directly contradicted his other comments about when Vegas became a likely destination at the trade deadline when Vegas attempted to acquire him in a 3-team trade." -Smitheram
Regardless, what's done is done, and nothing can take away from the fact that Mitch Marner is officially a Vegas Golden Knight.
