The Colorado Avalanche have ensured Brock Nelson won't reach free agency, signing the forward to a three-year extension with an AAV of $7.5 million.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise, considering recent speculation suggesting Nelson was poised to test the market in search of a bigger deal than Colorado was expected to offer.

Avalanche reportedly to be eyeing another blockbuster deal after Nelson extension.

Graham Tiedtke from Mile High Sticking writes that at 33 years old, it's likely that Nelson will finish out his career in Colorado. I'm a fan of this extension, especially considering the steep price the Avalanche paid to acquire him earlier this year.
While it wasn't the best scenario giving up Calum Ritchie and additional assets at the time, locking Nelson in for multiple seasons helps ease the sting of that trade.
"The Avalanche now have just $1.20 million in cap space, signaling that there will be some more moves to free up cap space to fill out their roster. We could see someone like Martin Necas or Charlie Coyle perhaps be shipped out. I would think it would be Necas between those two, given his role this year and the fact that he is much younger than Coyle. The Avalanche should get more for him." -Tiedtke

Tiedtke also writes that at the end of the day, Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland has a vision, even it not every fan agrees with it. The reality is that the Avalanche still have roster holes to fill, whether through re-signings, free-agent pickups, or even AHL additions with NHL potential. Don't be surprised if a few call-ups make their mark this season.
"It's good that the Avalanche are keeping Nelson in the sense that it keeps a somewhat familiar face around. Hopefully he can put up bigger numbers for the team next season and especially into the postseason, where he ha zero goals and four assists in seven games." -Tiedtke

Nelson's extension is a big step in the right direction for Colorado. We'll see what else they have planned throughout the rest of the summer.
