Brock Nelson signs 3-year extension with the Avalanche

Well, there's no need to worry anymore as Nelson officially inked a three-year contract extension with the Avs on Wednesday.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports that the Avalanche have locked in center Brock Nelson with a three-year contract extension carrying a $7.5 million AAV, totalling $22.5 million. Nelson was set to hit unrestricted free agency but will now remain in Colorado through the 2027-28 season.

Earlier this week, Dan Mount from Last Words On Sports writes David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period provided an update on the contract negotiations between the Avalanche and Nelson, noting that both parties share a mutual interest in reaching an extension.

By locking up Nelson, the Avalanche have removed one of the top centers from this summer's free-agent market. It's a significant move, especially considering the high price they paid to acquire him at the trade deadline, sending their 2026 first-round pick, top prospect Calum Ritchie, and additional assets to the New York Islanders.

Letting him walk after a first-round playoff exit to the Stars would have been a major setback for the organization. Nelson alleviates the pressure of having to find a second-line center this offseason.

Nelson scored six goals and tallied 13 points in 19 games with the Avalanche. Colorado aimed for a championship but was stopped by Dallas, their Central Division rivals. Although Nelson didn't score any goals in the seven-game series, he contributed four assists for the team.
